Claflin School Studios, located in the former Claflin Elementary School, was created in 1988 to address the lack of live-work space for artists in Newton. Many of the original owners are still living and working there.

 

No other unit in the complex offers this layout: 1143 square feet of living space along with a separate 1350 square foot studio. The main living space includes an open kitchen and dining area with three oversized windows. The living room is at the other end of the unit, with sliding glass doors out to common yard space and a path to the studio. Two bedrooms, a study currently being used as a huge walk-in closet, a full bathroom and in-unit washer/dryer complete the package.

 

The oversized windows, exposed concrete block wall in one of the bedrooms, and ceilings that surpass 9 feet harken back to the original 1950s structure.

 

The studio space can be accessed either from the back or through the main entrance to the building. This fantastic space can be used in so many different ways: soaring ceilings allow for large-scale projects, or you can divide the space for rental income. There is a bathroom with a shower and utility space with recently installed heating and hot water systems.

 

Unit 7 has deeded parking, separate storage, and two bicycle spaces. There is extensive common outdoor space and guest parking.
